As probably know Twitter is a fantastic way to grow your professional and personal network and find jobs. But if you’ve outgrown your twitter name or find it a little embarrassing, I’ve got great news! You can easily change it! You don’t have to start up a new account and lose all your followers. All you have to do is go into your account settings and type in your new name in the username field. That’s it! Easy peasy right?
But before you click on over to Twitter here’s some advice to guide you.
Choose a name you can proudly say anywhere, anytime.
I know this tip may sound obvious but I am going to share it anyway. Using your full name is always the safest and most professional way to go, simply because, it’s your name. So if your real name isn’t taken yet grab it! If it is, try including your middle initial. You could also add an underscore in front, in the middle or on the end. Or make it a very short sentence like mine… @itscherjones!
That being said, you don’t have to use your real name. You can express your creativity with a handle that personifies what you want to be known for. Just make sure you can you can proudly say it out loud at a networking event and include on your business card and resume. So choose wisely
Keep your social media usernames consistent
Since you are reading this on Linkedin, I am going to assume that you have more than just a twitter account. If that’s the case, you should try to keep your usernames consistent across all of your social media platforms. Most networks will allow you to change your name at least once. Before you start changing all of your accounts I want you to visit www.checkusernames.com. This handy website will check to see if your new user name is available on 160 of the most popular Social Networks. It’s a great time saving resource for your makeover process.
And that’s it. Easier than you thought right?
I’d love to see what you came up with. Leave your before and after twitter name makeovers in the comments below.
